Visit Bevalo and Taste the Love (of Coffee)

Visit Bevalo and Taste the Love (of Coffee)- by Marguerite Marceau Henderson

A new coffeehouse in this city is big news. So, imagine my thrill to hear of a hip, happening and totally chic new establishment downtown Salt Lake City.

Opened about 8 months ago by two young entrepreneurs - married couple Andrea Maize and Jon Stovall (his mother Suzie takes cooking classes from me), Bevalo is located at 123 East 2nd South, in an old bank building, free standing brick ediface with plenty of seating and filled with canister of free trade beans.

The concentration of coffee beans from around the world is intensified by the aroma as you enter. Cups of coffee are made to order. No coffee is sitting in large stainless steel containers for hours. Your cup of freshly brewed coffee is just minutes from ordering. As are cups of freshly steeped teas.

Cappuccinos, lattes, and espresso hits are their specialty, with coffee “art” on the top of each cappuccino and latte to add eye appeal. “Making sweet coffee love ” is their motto.

A few pastries are baked daily on premise, along with quiches and salads for lunch. Coffee is their passion, the food is just an accoutrement, not a focus.

Coffee, tea or chocolate?

Coffee, tea or chocolate?

Coffee, tea or chocolate?

I had in mind a pot of tea and a scone when I headed out to Bevalo, a fresh downtown coffeeshop on this English-ish day. But I got distracted by something on the menu called a "chocolate martini." Shaken, not stirred. And no kick, of course. Just espresso, dark chocolate and cream, shaken over ice and strained into a glass.

I'm not completely crazy. I asked that my martini be made with milk instead of cream. I only know of one person who drank cream when he was thirsty and that is Chef Paul Prudhomme. IJS.

THis is a real grown-up treat—complexly bitter and and energizing in a gentler way than coffee but a sexier way than tea. The only thing that could have made it better was a hot day. Fortunately, my companion shared his his hot pot with me.

RoyalAnts.com - Starting Up a Startup - Jon and Andrea: Owners of Bevalo

Jon and Andrea give some helpful hints for you budding entrepreneurs, and insight into the passion they possess for their products. I was immediately struck and impressed by the attention to detail they show in all aspects of their business. This included, but was certainly not limited to the cleanliness of the shop, the great art on the walls, the overall ambiance, the hand made/organic treats, and the importance put on making the perfect cup of coffee (or tea!) using the best beans/leaves in town.

Bevalo is not your average coffee shop. The owners feel indebted to the hard work of everyone who makes their craft possible, especially the people who labor to grow and gather the beans and leaves. They know the background and history of the people and the product, and I was lucky enough to capture some of these stories in this video. I hope you enjoy getting to know Jon, Andrea, and Bevalo. Please let us know what you think by leaving a comment, and DEFINITELY go indulge in one of the amazing drinks/treats they offer. I recommend either a Latte (Jon makes a killer Latte!), or the Peach Rooibos tea. Bevalo is located at 200 s 123 e in Salt Lake City.

Bevalo - Community and Coffee in Downtown

a picture of bevaloHere is a snippet of a blog entry on the Visit Salt Lake website. Click the link at the bottom to view the rest.

I’m sitting in Bevalo for the second time in as many weeks, listening to a casual hip hop blend drinking “Unity” tea. A lightly sweetened blend with a hint of organic licorice root, it’s good enough that while in downtown Salt Lake today I had to give heed to my craving and stop by.

The more I sit here soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, the more I realize that Bevalo is well on its way to becoming one of my top spots. The fact that it has reliable WiFi is a plus.

Bravo for Bevalo - Westminister College Article

Bevalo was reviewed in the Westminister College newspaper. Here is a bit of what they wrote with a link to the entire article below.

If you're looking for a coffee shop a step above and a little outside the norm in Salt Lake City, Bevalo may be just the place for you. Located at 123 East 200 South, in the heart of downtown and very near the Gallivan Center, the unique venue makes for the ideal stop after ice-skating or a concert.

Bevalo has several standout features. First, they are the only coffee shop in town brewing all-organic Barefoot Coffee Roasters brand coffee. Barefoot Coffee, based in Santa Clara, CA (barefootcoffeeroasters.com), is a micro roaster that focuses on fair trade and organic coffee.
